We rounded up several of our favorites on the slides ahead, and they're all available for you to shop right now. Unlike a standard desk lamp, these styles have a mid-century, retro look that speaks well to a modern design style. ![]() They offer more light than styles with shades do, but are comparable with task lighting in the sense that they can provide targeted brightness. Bare bulb lamps, on the other hand, are another perfect choice when you're looking to brighten up a room. Often called task lamps, these pieces also have moveable or tilted lampshades, as well-and are perfect for those who need varied lighting solutions depending on the project that you are working on. These lamps generally have retractable or folding arms that will allow you to move the bulb closer or further away from your desktop. Targeted styles, as their name implies, offer more focused light. ![]() Stack Lighting, which Architectural Lighting wrote about last fall. These pieces typically have larger lampshades that diffuse light and offer a softer glow, which is why they are best suited to areas where they aren't the only source of illumination or spots where you don't need targeted or bright light. Sengleds LED lamps feature speakers, Wi-Fi signal boosters, and security cameras. Tabletop iterations might not be the most intuitive choice, but they have a small footprint (while also being big on style!) and can easily be pulled from living room or bedrooms and placed right onto the desktop. Ultimately, there are three main types of lamps that work well on a desk: tabletop, targeted, and bare bulb. I also always consider what kind of shade I want: a lamp that casts light downward toward a book, or one that casts ambient light around like a lantern? What type of scale I want: a tiny lamp that complements other objects on a nightstand, or a major piece that’s a key design focus? And what type of functionality I want: a portable piece that can move from dining table to fire escape to bed, or a large sculptural lamp that’s a fixed design element? Below, a few of my favorites.Whether you're transforming an existing area of your house into a work-from-home office or simply updating your the workstation you've been using for years, finding the right lighting solutions can make a world of difference when it comes to getting the job done. When I purchase lighting for myself, I try to look for pieces with simple forms that will work with my always-changing tastes timeless materials like metal, stone, and ceramic and spirited, unique design elements - like a curved, sculptural base or a wok-shaped top - that bring a sense of delight. Especially a table lamp, which does double duty as a figural object in conversation with other elements of a room and, of course, as a source of light and warmth. And while big-ticket items - like dining-room tables or cash wraps - tend to be front of mind, lighting plays just as important a role in a space. ![]() In my job as a principal at Atelier Cho Thompson, a bicoastal design firm working across architecture, interiors, and graphics, I’ve worked on projects from homes to restaurants to studios to hotels.
